Utility Service Providers

Duke Energy (Electricity)

If you are setting up a new account with Duke Energy and do not have a Social Security Number (SSN), you'll need to call Duke Energy directly. When prompted for your SSN or federal tax identification number (ITIN), simply wait, and your call will be transferred to a customer service representative.

During the call, you will be asked for your date of birth, the address where you'll be living in Durham, and the start date for your electricity service (typically 3 business days). You'll also need to provide your passport number for a credit check. Additionally, a security deposit of $100–$250 may be required, which will be refunded when you close your account.

Payment options include paying by debit or credit card over the phone or online, with a $1.50 processing fee. You can also pay the deposit in cash at an authorized location (cash payments at Harris Teeter are also subject to a $1.50 processing fee).

Dominion Energy (Gas)

Most apartments in Durham use electric appliances, so a gas account may not be necessary. However, if you need gas service, Dominion Energy is the provider. Without an SSN, you'll need to complete an Identity Verification Form and provide a notarized copy of your passport. You can either email, fax, or mail the form and passport to Dominion Energy.

A security deposit of $75–$200 is required, and you can pay it by phone with a $3.50 fee or at an authorized location in cash.

Durham Water Management

In many apartments, water and sewage service is included in the rent. However, if you are required to pay separately for water, you can start service by submitting a request online and attaching a copy of your lease. A $50 deposit is required, which can be paid by check or in person at Durham City Hall.

Internet Service Providers

Spectrum does not require an SSN, only your passport number. There are no deposits, sign-up fees, or equipment rental fees, and installation is completed within 2-3 days.
